GPS data taken from aimless dérive wanderings around Vilnius is coded into a time-based animation. This is placed on a spatial visualisation using noise-generated ridges and the digital elevation model of Lithuania (from UAB HNIT-Baltic).
Using the same elevation model data, a reflective ambient track is created and interacts with these contours. Using a singular data source, a multi-sensory aesthetic interpretation of a city is produced and layered with the personal exploration of this environment.
This is an initial experiment in the potential of traditional data visualisation techiniques with abstract approaches to understanding our built and natural environment. The goal of data visualisation is to identify patterns; spot the trends in swathes of data and communicate the results. The application of this process to more site-specific case studies in the future will highlight how this method can aesthetically identify the varied effects of human interaction, intervention, and neglect of our surroundings.
Completed during a residency with SODAS2123, Vilnius, Lithuania, and presented as part of an artist talk at Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Art Academy. SODAS residency supported by Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius City Municipality.
